When it comes to decor, there’s nothing more fun than creating a theme for a room around an inspiration piece. Whether you’ve been given the task of creating the decor for a party or you have to pick out colors for your living room, starting with a special painting, artwork, or wallpaper and building your color palette around it is one of the best ways to choose a color palette. In this blog, we’re going to examine How to Decorate a Room from the Color Palette to the Finishing Touches. This is no small task, and we’ll take a look at how to choose your color palette, furniture and rugs, and finally the finishing touches.
Choosing a Color Palette based on a Favorite Wallpaper
Our client was redecorating their living room. They had medium brown hardwood floors that were in good shape and wanted to keep the walls a neutral beige color. We discussed having a feature wall and they were very quick to fall in love with this wallpaper so we built them a color palette based on their choices.
Following the 60-30-10 Rule
A good color design starts with the 60-30-10 rule. What is this rule you might ask … It’s a classic design element rule that helps create a color palette for a space. It states that 60% of the room should be a dominant color, 30% should be the secondary color or texture and the last 10% should be an accent. With that in mind, we started putting the rest of the room together. They wanted to keep the furniture somewhat modern so our first stop was Homary for furniture. There were lots of options and all of the sofas came with matching loveseats or chairs.
Making a Decision on Furniture
They decided to go with a modern velvet curved sofa in the terracotta color that they loved so much. It will fit well in the room and will provide a pop of color given the neutral walls and brown flooring. The sofa and tables all had gold tone finishes on them, staying consistent with the gold cheetah in the wallpaper. They hadn’t planned on purchasing a console table, but they were over-the-moon excited when they saw it. They are going to try and add another layer of glass shelving to the top of it so they can use it for their TV. If that doesn’t work out, they will use it in the entryway.
Styling the tables with a few classic decor pieces
Now that we have the 60-30 part of the equation filled up with the beige walls and coffee table, and the terracotta furniture, that leaves some greenery and finishing touches for the remaining 10%. Some plants, either real or artificial, and a couple of pieces of pottery with some greenery in them should do it.
