It is probably important when you’re thinking about a new floral arrangement to be intentional. Do you have a specific purpose for this arrangement? Where are you going to place the flowers? What kind of container or vase are you arranging them into? And finally, you should think about a color scheme before shopping for flowers. Then, when you go to buy the floral stems, you know you’re picking up colors that work well together. Monochromatic schemes, which show off a variety of different hues of the same color, can be striking. For another high-impact floral design, try complementary colors that will pop against each other. In this post, we’ll give you tips for designing a stunning faux floral centerpiece. We’re going to touch on what type of florals you should buy, which colors to put together, and how to place them in a vase or bowl.

Our Tips for the Best Faux Flower Look

  • Stick with soft, light colors. The stronger colors tend to look a little more artificial to my eyes!
  • Use stems that are all of the same color. This is important! Using two or more types of flowers is ok (although less is best), but it can be distracting and become busy if you’re using more than one color. Simplicity is elegance in this situation. Your greenery will add all the contrast that you need.
  • Design your floral centerpiece with simplicity in mind. I think a key to using artificial flowers successfully is to group them as though they’ve been gathered from your garden. Think tall stems that have lots of space in and around them for a loose and airy garden look, or a compact, tighter bundle can be effective as well.
  • Use the best floral stems you can afford. When it comes to faux flowers, the higher-end stems do tend to capture more realism. If you’re planning to keep the stems as part of your decor for many seasons, they can be worth the investment.
  • Hide the stems. While I’ll often design fresh flowers in my favorite clear glass vases (find my favorite vases here), artificial flowers tend to look more realistic when gathered into ceramic or pottery-style vases. Seeing the stems often give them away as fake flowers, even when the blooms don’t!
  • Bend the stems, don’t cut. This is a tip from a florist friend, and I love it! Why cut the tall stems when you can simply bend them to hide them in your (pottery, not glass) vase? That way, you can get the height you want without sacrificing the length for future use.
  • Less is more. One bouquet of artificial flowers in your entry (or bedroom, or bath, or living room) can go a long way. Use faux flowers sparingly in your home for maximum effect.
  • The perfect arrangement of flowers is the one with the right balance. This means that the height of the arrangement should be at least one and a half times more than the height of the container. Although the height of the arrangement can be higher than this, it is never lower.

What type of Faux Florals are the Most Realistic Looking?

Real Touch blooms are often considered the most realistic, and they are made of a latex polymer vs traditional silk blooms. It truly comes down to personal preference and finding a natural look that works for your style.

How high do you want flowers to stick out of a vase?

Flowers should be one and a half to two times the height of their vase. For example, for a 12-inch flower vase, your flowers should be 18 to 24 inches tall. For bowl-shaped and small cube containers, keep flowers at about one and half times the height of the vase.
