A Play with Nature: Waterfront Fire Pits

Fire Pit Safety

I would be remiss without some brief discussion about fire pit safety so here are a few things we thought about when building ours at the lake.

  • Fire pit should be at least 10 ft away from your home or other structures.
  • Have handy a fully charged fire extinguisher, bucket of water and/or garden hose when using your fire pit
  • Use a spark screen on your fire pit to contain the flames, especially with wood-burning models
  • Inground Fire Pits with no guard around them are completely UNSAFE. Nobody wants to see someone fall in and get seriously hurt.
  • Don’t leave children unattended around a fire pit
  • Always extinguish your fire before leaving it
  • A deck-safe fire pit should have an ash catch tray
  • Always turn off the gas to your fire pit when not in use
